Add Page Numbers Online with PDFToolkits

Add page numbers to a PDF with PDFToolkits to make reports, handouts and assembled documents easier to navigate. Choose a starting number and apply a consecutive sequence to all pages or only those you select.

Place the numbers at the top or bottom, aligned left, center or right. Adjust the font size and distance from the edge to suit the existing page layout.

The tool adds visible number text to your pages. It does not remove existing page numbers, renumber bookmarks or change the PDF viewer’s internal page labels.

When Is This PDF Tool Useful?

  • Reports: add consistent numbering after assembling the final document.
  • Study materials: number notes and handouts for easier reference.
  • Thesis drafts: skip a cover and add Arabic numerals to selected pages; check your institution’s formatting requirements.
  • Combined documents: add a continuous visible sequence after merging files.

A Practical Example

For a six-page PDF with an unnumbered cover, enter 2-6 in the page field and start at 1. The selected pages receive 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. In the sequence format, they display 1 / 5 through 5 / 5. If you start that same selection at 10, the sequence runs from 10 / 14 through 14 / 14: the denominator is the last number, not the original document’s page count.

Add Page Numbers Features and Limitations

Existing printed numbers are not removed, so choose an unused position or use a clean original. Numbers may overlap existing content if the margins are too small. The current tool uses Helvetica, Arabic numerals and a fixed dark text color; Roman numerals, custom prefixes and automatic blank-page skipping are not included.

  • Process one unencrypted PDF up to 50 MB.
  • Use individual page numbers and ranges, or leave the selection blank for all pages.
  • Download a separate output and keep your original file.
  • Use Reset to clear the selected file and start again.

Review important documents after processing. Editing a digitally signed PDF can invalidate its signature. Large or complex files may exceed the memory available on your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I skip the cover page?

Yes. For a six-page PDF, enter 2-6 and start at 1 to leave the cover unchanged and number the remaining pages.

Can numbering start at a number other than 1?

Yes. Choose any whole starting number from 1 to 999,999. Selected pages are numbered consecutively in document order.

What does the 1 / 10 format mean?

It shows the current sequence number followed by the last number in the selected sequence. Five selected pages starting at 10 will display 10 / 14 through 14 / 14.

Can I choose where the numbers appear?

Yes. Choose one of six top or bottom positions, aligned left, center or right. You can also adjust font size and edge margin.

Will the tool remove existing page numbers?

No. It adds new visible numbers without detecting or removing existing ones. Review the result to avoid overlapping or duplicate numbers.

Does it change the PDF viewer’s page labels?

No. The tool adds visible text to the page content. It does not edit bookmarks or the viewer’s internal page labels.

Can I use Roman numerals?

The current tool supports Arabic numerals only. Roman numerals and custom text prefixes are not included.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The numbering operation runs in your browser. Keep the original, especially if it contains digital signatures that editing may invalidate.
